Otis Tamasauskas

Otis Tamasauskas was born in 1947 in Terschenreuth, Germany in a displaced persons camp, following his parents' flight from Lithuania after the Russian communist occupation. He immigrated to Niagara Falls, ON with his family at the age of five. Moved by folk art, design and creativity throughout his youth, Otis graduated with a BFA from the University of Windsor, Windsor ON. Otis was Master Printer and Director of Etching at Open Studio in Toronto and has taught printmaking at McMaster University, Hamilton ON, University of Toronto, Toronto ON, and Queen's University, Kingston ON.

Over decades as both artist and teacher, Otis has reimagined and reinvented the traditional notions of printmaking, becoming one of Canada’s leading artists in the form. His complex works, in both subject matter and technique, are extraordinarily beautiful and instantly recognizable as his. Otis Tamasauskas’ prints, often unique or of varied editions, bring together elements of the natural world, found items, images of the past and ruminations on his own personal experiences to create inspiring, hand-built constructions and collages. This amalgamation of contrasting surfaces, printing techniques, images and media is trademark Tamasauskas. A master of the most challenging print techniques, his adept and precise use of lithography, photo, woodcut and engraving, sets his work apart from others in the field.

"When I made my first print, I knew this was it. It was what I wanted to do in life. I guess, the idea of being able to use a plate or block and print it many times, side by side. The sequential images provided a vicarious explanation of obsessive patterns that reoccur in Lithuanian folk art and design, relating to my early visual experiences.”
